Our Approach to Health and Safety

As a corporate citizen committed to avoiding occupational injuries and enhancing quality of life, we ensure a safe and vibrant workplace for both our employees and business associates. To this end, we have established a set of guidelines on health and safety and have built a system to ensure these guidelines are observed. The following statements are the key aspects of our health and safety approach:
  • - Safety takes precedence to productivity or quality. We are obliged to create a safe and vibrant work environment for anyone who enters POSCO office buildings or worksites
  • - We have the responsibility to identify potential health and safety risks to our employees and business associates and make continuous improvements to our work environment

Occupational Health and Safety Management System (ISO45001)

POSCO obtained the ISO45001 certification for its staff-driven and systematic framework to oversee occupational health and safety (OH&S) management practices. The ISO45001 is an international standard for OH&S management system. We also established safety & health goals and strategies based on the Planning, Doing, Checking and Acting (PDCA) Cycle. We have since ensured systemic and consistent implementation of the OH&S system.
  • ※ Since 2021, we have received feedback on workplace safety through the Safety Suggestion Box (e-mail: esafety@posco.com)
  • - The Safety Suggestion Box is open to anyone who works at POSCO worksites. If you have seen unsafe behavior or have been asked to perform an unsafe task at worksites, you may address your concern using the Safety Suggestion Box.
  • - We have addressed 100% of safety breaches reported by our partners in 2021.

Health and Safety Training

  • - Every year, we hold statutory health and safety training sessions for our employees and help our partners to organize their employee H&S training programs. This is to raise safety awareness and to reduce occupational hazards.
We provide additional learning programs fine-tuned to various levels of employees and different job functions so that employees can develop the skills that they need.
  • - The Safety Experience Zone (at the Global Safety Center), which is open to both the staff and the general public, helps to raise awareness on safety.

Occupational Health Management System

At POSCO, we understand that the health of our employees is our most valuable resource. Therefore, our disease prevention and quality of life initiatives are focused on three workstreams: workplace improvement, disease treatment and health enhancement.
Create a safe work environment
  • · Ensure safe use of chemical materials by establishing a chemical substances management system that is based on the material safety data sheets (MSDS) mechanism
  • · Identify hazards through measurements and evaluations of the work space and take corrective action
  • · Investigate risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders and prevent incidence
  • · Address discomfort caused by wearing personal protection equipment
Establish an early-stage diagnosis system
  • · Conduct regular checkups (e.g. general, special, and advanced examinations) to detect early-stage disorders in employees
  • · Provide reference to affiliated hospitals, physical therapy services, and vaccination events to ensure disease prevention and timely treatment
  • · Systematically prevent and control the spread of infectious diseases such as COVID-19
Improve employee wellness
  • · Promote healthy lifestyles, e.g., smoking cessation, responsible drinking, regular exercise, better eating habits, to enhance employee wellness
  • · Provide consultation for employees with health conditions such as cardiovascular disease and chronic illness
  • · Help employees reduce work-related stress through therapies and mental health programs
