Ambitious Vision
Just as iron and steel helped to develop human civilization, POSCO's steel helped to develop the Korean economy.
In the 1960s, the idea of producing steel in Korea molded into a concrete masterplan to build an integrated steelworks. Although we lacked both capital and skilled labor, we did not give up. The April 1, 1968 ribbon-cutting signaled a race to build an integrated steel mill.

    Commenced construction on Pohang Steel Mill Phase 1

    Aug. 4
    The Korean Government set a capacity target of 1.03 million tons for the company
    Aug. 26
    The 3rd Korea-Japan Ministerial Meeting took place
  • 1968
    Apr. 1
    Established Pohang Iron and Steel Company. Mr. Tae-joon Park took office as its first president
    May 20
    Opened the Pohang Construction Office, dubbed Rommel House
  • 1967
    Jun. 30
    The Korean government selected Pohang as the site for an integrated steelworks
    Sep. 11
    Korea Tungsten was selected as the builder of the steel mill
    Oct. 3
    Held a groundbreaking ceremony for the steel mill
